No insight without a connection

An inverter or battery works on its own even without an internet connection, but then you see nothing in an app and the manufacturer can't send an update. A Wi-Fi or 4G dongle, or for larger installations a smart logger, connects the system to your network so you can see output, usage and faults on your phone. With some brands, that connection is also needed for functions such as dynamic switching or surplus detection to work.

Wi-Fi, LAN or 4G

Got good Wi-Fi coverage at the meter cupboard, then a simple Wi-Fi dongle is usually enough, such as the SolaX Pocket Wifi. Is the signal weak there, then a version with a LAN connection is more stable, or a 4G dongle if there's no network available at all. With larger installations with multiple inverters, you use a smart logger, which reads out and forwards all inverters together instead of connecting each device separately.

What to watch for

A communication module is brand-specific and doesn't work outside its matching platform. A Huawei dongle doesn't operate a SolaX inverter, and the other way round. So check the model of your inverter or battery before ordering. With new installations the basic module is included as standard, here you'll mainly find replacement or extra units, for example with a weak Wi-Fi connection or an expansion with more inverters.
