Enphase

Enphase takes a different technical approach from most other brands in this range. Instead of one central inverter, the system uses micro-inverters fitted per solar panel. That has direct consequences for how the battery connects: the IQ Battery is AC-coupled, meaning it can be added afterwards to almost any existing solar installation, whatever brand of inverter is already on the wall.

That is also the main selling point. Where other battery systems set requirements for DC compatibility with the existing inverter, or even demand a full system replacement, Enphase is not bound by that. For homes with an older or unusual solar installation it is a way out: you do not have to replace your whole generation set-up just to add a battery.

That flexibility does not make Enphase the cheapest route. AC coupling usually costs some efficiency compared with a fully integrated DC system, and you pay for the convenience of universal fit. For a new build where everything goes in at once, an integrated system is sometimes more efficient.
