What backup power gets you
In a normal grid outage, even a house with solar panels and a battery goes dark, because the installation shuts itself down as soon as the grid drops out. That's a safety requirement, not a glitch. A backup power setup makes sure the battery can still feed part of the house in that case, independent of the grid.
ATS switch and backup box
An ATS switch (automatic transfer switch) detects a power outage and automatically switches from grid power to battery power, without you having to do anything yourself. A backup box, such as the AlphaESS BackupBox, does much the same in practice and also often controls which circuits in the house are included and which aren't during backup power. The switches here go up to 63 A, plenty for the main circuits in a house.
An honest catch
Not every battery system supports backup power by default, and not every installation is suitable for it without a change in the meter cupboard. Also don't count on backup power for the whole house: usually you connect a limited number of circuits, such as lighting, the fridge and internet, rather than the tumble dryer and the induction hob at the same time. For anyone living in an area with few power outages, this is often a long-term consideration, not a necessity from day one.
