Inverters
Hybrid or solar inverter?
That is the first question, and it determines the rest. A solar inverter converts direct current from your panels into alternating current for your installation, and nothing more. A hybrid inverter can also charge and discharge a battery. If you do not have a battery now but think you might want one in three years, a hybrid model is usually the cheaper route, even though you pay more now. If you are certain storage will never be added, a hybrid inverter is money spent on technology that sits idle.
| Feature | Solar inverter | Hybrid inverter |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | converts panels to alternating current | converts panels and drives a battery |
| Examples here | the GT and SDT series, SUN2000 models | the ET series, PowerOcean Plus, AELIO-50K |
| Adding a battery later | needs an extra battery inverter | already included |
| Purchase price | lower per kW | higher, you pay for the storage function |
| Best choice for | solar power only, no storage plans | storage now or within a few years |
Which power fits your installation?
The inverter's power follows from your roof's power and your connection, not from your consumption. Rule of thumb in practice: an inverter may be lighter than the peak power of your panels, because that peak power is only reached a few hours a year. A 120 kWp roof with a 100 kW inverter delivers barely less over the year, and saves on the purchase price. Just do not overdo it: too far undersized and you do genuinely cut yield on sunny afternoons.
The models here run from 20 kW for a small commercial roof to 330 kW for a hall or a field. Everything is three-phase. Below 20 kW, take a look at the inverters for homes and small connections.
Which brands are here?
GoodWe makes up the largest part of the range: solid mid-range, broadly compatible and with many variants per power class. Huawei supplies the heaviest models, up to 330 kW, and is the choice for large fields and halls. EcoFlow, with PowerOcean Plus, sits in the range around 20 to 30 kW. SolaX supplies the AELIO inverters that belong to the same series as the commercial batteries. Sigenergy is here with the Energy Controller, technically the most advanced in this line-up.
What to watch out for
Pay particular attention to the combination with storage. A hybrid inverter rarely works with any battery you choose: manufacturers release a list per model, and outside that the warranty is voided. With SolaX and Sigenergy that is entirely within the brand itself. Check before you order, so you know for certain the pairing is correct.
Also, a model with the addition "without display" is exactly that, you read out the installation via the app or a data logger instead. Fine for a roof nobody walks past, less convenient if the person managing the installation prefers to check at the cabinet. And think of the notification to your grid operator. Above certain power levels prior approval is needed, and that procedure in practice takes longer than the inverter's delivery time.
What we take care of
We help work out which power fits your roof and your connection, check that the inverter works together with the desired battery, and deliver at a sharp price. For commercial installations we leave placement to your own installer, who connects it to the Dutch NEN 1010 standard. Want to arrange the measuring and control side straight away too? See commercial accessories.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a hybrid inverter without a battery at first?
Yes. It then works as a regular solar inverter and you connect the battery later. Do check in advance which batteries the model supports, otherwise you are stuck with a short list in three years.
What does PID mean in the product names?
That stands for a built-in provision against potential-induced degradation, an effect where panels slowly lose yield due to voltage differences. Especially on large installations with long strings, that is worth having.
How many inverters do I need for a large roof?
That depends on the layout of your roof. Several smaller inverters are useful with different roof planes or orientations, one large one is cheaper per kW on an even roof. We calculate both options for you with a quote.
Does such an inverter also work as backup power during a grid outage?
Only hybrid models can do that, and only with a battery and the right switching added. A solar inverter always shuts down during a grid outage, even if the sun is shining. That is a safety requirement, not a flaw.
Do you also handle the registration with the grid operator?
The installer connecting the system handles the registration. We do supply all the technical data needed for it.
