A three-phase hybrid inverter is needed with a three-phase connection, or to reserve power for a heat pump or fast charger. Balances the phases evenly.

Which three-phase inverter suits you?

If you have a three-phase connection, in practice that usually means you need a three-phase inverter as well. Without that combination, some of your phases can sit unused when feeding back to the grid or charging. And if you do not have a three-phase connection yet but are considering a heat pump or a high-power EV charger, this is often the wisest choice for the longer term.

Commercial installations and homes with a larger solar panel array almost always go for three-phase, simply because the power generated becomes too high for a single-phase connection. A three-phase inverter also spreads the load more evenly if your consumption is unevenly spread across the day, for instance because you run several appliances at once in the evening.

What should you look out for?

Pay attention to the maximum power per phase and to how the inverter handles imbalance between phases, because this differs per brand. New-build homes in the Netherlands now often come with a three-phase connection as standard, even with a modest roof area. A three-phase inverter costs more to buy than a single-phase model, so it is not the cheapest option if your connection and consumption give no reason for it.

When to choose three-phase, and when not?

Choose three-phase if your connection is already three-phase, if you are planning a heat pump or a fast EV charger, or if your system exceeds 6 kW. If you have a small installation on an existing single-phase connection with no plans to expand, three-phase means paying for capacity you will not use. If in doubt, we look at your meter cupboard (the "meterkast" in Dutch homes) and your consumption profile for the past year together.

What do we take care of?

We look at your connection, roof area and planned loads together, and base our advice on that. Installation is carried out by certified installers to the Dutch NEN 1010 standard. Through our partner you can arrange a dynamic energy contract if you wish, with no lock-in. For three-phase systems too, the business case changes once net metering in the Netherlands ends in 2027. From then on, using your own power via the battery counts for more than it does now.

Do I always need a three-phase connection for a three-phase inverter?

In practice, yes. A three-phase inverter is designed to spread power across three phases. Without a three-phase connection you cannot use that advantage, and a single-phase inverter makes more sense.

Is three-phase more expensive than single-phase?

Yes, the inverter itself usually costs more to buy, and if you do not have three-phase yet, upgrading the connection through your grid operator can bring extra costs too. In return, you keep more headroom for future loads.

Do I need three-phase for a heat pump?

Not always. Smaller heat pumps run on single-phase too, but larger models often do require a three-phase connection. We check this with you against the specifications of the heat pump you are considering.

What does a three-phase hybrid inverter cost, roughly?

For hybrid inverters in general, single-phase and three-phase combined, prices range from roughly €750 to €2,300, indicative and varying by model and power rating. Because of their higher power, three-phase models usually sit at the upper end of that range.
