Installation

A single-phase hybrid inverter combines solar panels and a home battery, fits most homes with a single-phase connection, usually up to 5 to 7 kW.

Which single-phase inverter suits you?

If you have a standard single-phase connection, a single-phase hybrid inverter is usually the logical choice. It converts the direct current from your solar panels into alternating current, and manages the charging and discharging of your home battery at the same time. For an average household with 8 to 12 solar panels, a power rating between 3.6 and 6 kW is more than enough.

Most existing Dutch homes have a single-phase connection of 1x25A or 1x35A, and a single-phase inverter is well matched to that. You pay less for the unit than for a three-phase model, and installation is simpler because there is no phase balancing to arrange.

What should you look out for?

Look at more than power alone: the maximum charge power of the battery you connect to it counts too, as does the number of MPPT trackers if your panels sit on several roofs or orientations. If you are planning a heat pump or a high-power EV charger, you will hit the limit sooner with single-phase. In that case, three-phase is often the better investment, even though it costs a bit more to buy.

When to choose single-phase, and when not?

Choose single-phase if your connection is already single-phase, your system stays under 6 kW and you are not adding heavy loads such as a heat pump or a fast EV charger. If you are unsure, first ask your grid operator which connection you have. It is shown in your meter cupboard (the "meterkast" in Dutch homes) or on your latest annual statement. And if you expect to add a heat pump within a few years anyway, going straight to three-phase is often cheaper than converting later.

What do we take care of?

We advise you on the power rating and brand that fit your situation, based on your current and future consumption. Certified installers connect the system to the Dutch NEN 1010 standard, and through our partner you can switch to a dynamic energy contract. No lock-in, you decide if and when. From 2027 the Dutch net-metering scheme ("salderingsregeling") ends, which means a single-phase hybrid inverter with a battery pays for itself sooner than it does now.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save as much with single-phase as with three-phase?

For an average household with standard consumption it makes little difference, because you will not consume or feed back more than your connection can handle anyway. Only with larger systems or extra loads such as a heat pump do you hit a ceiling with single-phase.

Can I still switch to three-phase later?

You can, but in practice it means a new inverter and often an upgraded connection through your grid operator as well. If you already know you will expand, choosing three-phase straight away is usually cheaper than investing twice.

Does a single-phase inverter work with every battery brand?

No, that depends on the brand of your inverter. Most hybrid inverters only work with battery modules of the same brand. We always check this before giving advice.

What does a single-phase hybrid inverter cost, roughly?

For hybrid inverters in general, single-phase and three-phase combined, prices range from roughly €750 to €2,300, indicative and varying by model and power rating. Single-phase models usually sit at the lower end of that range.
