What is a modular system?
A modular home battery is made up of separate HV modules that you stack until you reach the capacity you need. The BYD Battery-Box is the best-known example. Start with 5 kWh and you can add another 5 kWh a year later without any trouble if your consumption grows.
What should you look out for?
This type of system is handy if you are unsure about your future consumption, for instance because a heat pump or EV charger is still to come. The downside is that installation takes a bit more work than a ready-made cabinet, and not every brand accepts modules from another brand. So stick with the same brand when you expand later.
When is this the right choice, and when is it not?
A modular system is the logical choice if you start with, say, 5 kWh now but know that a heat pump or electric car will follow in a year or two. You do not have to buy the full capacity straight away and can invest in stages.
If your consumption is stable and easy to predict, and you want as little fuss with cabling and connections as possible, a modular system is really just unnecessary puzzling. In that case look at an all-in-one system instead, which is quicker and simpler to install.
What do we take care of?
We help you work out how many modules you need now and how much room to keep free for later. Installation is carried out by a certified company to the Dutch NEN 1010 standard, and a dynamic energy contract via our partner comes with no obligations attached.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add modules from another brand to my existing system?
No, in almost every case you have to stay with the same brand. The control and communication between modules is brand-specific, so mixing is not an option.
How far can I expand in total?
That differs per brand and per inverter you use, as the inverter often determines the maximum power that can be connected. Check this before you start with a small number of modules.
Is a modular system more expensive to buy than all-in-one?
Not automatically. At the same total capacity the prices are usually close together, the difference mainly sits in flexibility later on. Individual modules can also be ordered separately, see battery modules for the current range.
Do I have to have all the modules installed in one go?
No, you can start with a basic setup and have modules added later. Do bear in mind that every expansion means a separate installation appointment. Still weighing this up against a fixed package? Then compare the options under home batteries.
